Not so fast.

So on Friday I mentioned the epitome of douchebaggery that was Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s  letter to schools saying that they didn’t have to include gay or transgendered people as a protected class in their anti-discrimination policies. Well… turns out that wasn’t such a good move. First the president of the College of William & Mary issued a statement that basically said: “This is the right thing to do so we’re going to continue doing it whether you like it or not.” Then Virginia delegate David Englin spoke up in the state legislature and made the case for an inclusive ENDA and then advocated for the various actions government could take to make it happen. Finally Jon Stewart was on it and skewered Ken “The Cooch” Cuccinelli properly:

Any bets on what happens next?

New Sherriff in town

In the grand history of regressive social policy pushed by the GOP this is a shining example of douchebaggery: The State Attorney General for Virgina issued a letter recently to universities and colleges which, in part, read:

It is my advice that the law and public policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia prohibit a college or university from including ‘sexual orientation,’ ‘gender identity,’ ‘gender expression,’ or like classification as a protected class within its non-discrimination policy absent specific authorization from the General Assembly.

So basically it’s alright to discriminate against those queers and social deviants because the legislature hasn’t said anything yet. Disregard your own moral codes or the executive order issued by the previous, Democratic governor because there’s a new sheriff in town and that stuff doesn’t matter anymore.

Give me a break.

HRC Fail

The Advocate has a pretty interesting short documentary up regarding the relationship between the Human Rights Campaign and the Obama Administration. HRC’s political strategy of getting all cozy with the White House strikes me as almost like battered spouse syndrome. Politicans make promises to secure the support of LGBT people and organizations. Then once in office they spurn anything controversial that has to do with LGBT issues they can but LGBT organizations, HRC in particular in recent history, seem adverse to calling them on it for fear of losing access. Then when election time comes around again they start courting gays and making apologies, excuses and promises hoping we’ll keep coming back. It’s really kind of sick.

What’s most striking about this piece is just how… slimy Joe Solmonese comes across. Nothing about him in the interview seems real or genuine or like he’s actually doing his best to secure legislative or any other kind of victory for LGBT people. Instead it seems like he just enjoys the spotlight afforded to him by being president of the foremost national gay organization. Which is extremely disappointing to me. There are real people suffering because of injustices in our law and government – people who lose their job, get persecuted or can’t go to the hospital when they’re sick because they can’t marry their partner – and HRC seems content with what is essentially sitting on the sidelines waving a sign that says “LIKE US!”

The documentary is well worth watching and it’s only 12 minutes, so head over to The Advocate and check it out.
