Kind of a Mongrel Language

The Super Bowl’s this weekend. Which always makes me wonder why football championships are called ‘Bowls’ off all the words they could use to describe the game they pick the one that makes me want to put on pajamas and eat cereal?

Also the universe came very close to imploding this week as Jon Stewart went on the O’Reilly Factor. Luckily for all living beings disaster was narrowly averted.

The Real War on Christmas

So you may have heard about this whole War on Christmas thing. You know… GAP refuses to say “Merry Christmas!” in their commercials so obviously the holiday is being excised from our culture. Now the odd logic behind slamming a secular clothing company for not acknowledging a religious holiday notwithstanding it’s worth noting that once upon a time there was actually a war on Christmas.

From the Independent, apparently the Germans didn’t like that Jesus was a Jew so they tried to remake the whole damn holiday to avoid that pesky fact:

“The baby Jesus was Jewish. This was both a problem and a provocation for the Nazis,” explained Judith Breuer, who organised the exhibition using the items she and her mother collected at flea markets over 30 years. “The most popular Christian festival of the year did not fit in with their racist ideology. They had to react and they did so by trying to make it less Christian.”

Kinda makes Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck et al. look a little petty at the things they’ve been whining over. Not that they needed help looking pathetic…
