Via TPM comesĀ this:
In an interview with blogger Mike Stark, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) appeared to say that African-Americans are worse off today because of legalized abortion, than they were compared to slavery.
“It seems like humanity is very gifted at hiding from something that’s obviously true. I mean in this country we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say, ‘Well how blind were they, what was the matter with them, you know, I can’t believe, I mean four million, this is incredible,’” said Stark. “And we’re right. We’re right, we should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more black children, far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today, than were being devastated by the policies of slavery.
First of all we do know how long slavery exited in this country: From 1607 to 1865. Historical accuracy aside this flabbergasts me. Here’s a man from the party that advocates for abstinence only education and against programs that would help the educational and financial equality that exists amongst different ethnic groups and is mainly responsible for the fact that half of all incarcerated males are black saying that black people are worse off today because of abortion.
Here’s something to consider: women have always and will always have abortions for various reasons. That’s just life, unfortunate though it may be the high abortion rates amongst African Americans isn’t a reason to criminalize the practice – it’s a reason to seriously ponder why it is African American women resort to abortion as often as they do and address those issues.
Here’s a video of the Congressman.
