The Congressman from Arizona has the floor…

Via TPM comes  this:

In an interview with blogger Mike Stark, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) appeared to say that African-Americans are worse off today because of legalized abortion, than they were compared to slavery.

“It seems like humanity is very gifted at hiding from something that’s obviously true. I mean in this country we had slavery for God knows how long. And now we look back on it and we say, ‘Well how blind were they, what was the matter with them, you know, I can’t believe, I mean four million, this is incredible,’” said Stark. “And we’re right. We’re right, we should look back on that with criticism. It is a crushing mark on America’s soul. And yet today, half of all black children are aborted. Half of all black children are aborted. Far more black children, far more of the African-American community is being devastated by the policies of today, than were being devastated by the policies of slavery.

First of all we do know how long slavery exited in this country: From 1607 to 1865. Historical accuracy aside this flabbergasts me. Here’s a man from the party that advocates for abstinence only education and against programs that would help the educational and financial equality that exists amongst different ethnic groups and is mainly responsible for the fact that half of all incarcerated males are black saying that black people are worse off today because of abortion.

Here’s something to consider: women have always and will always have abortions for various reasons. That’s just life, unfortunate though it may be the high abortion rates amongst African Americans isn’t a reason to criminalize the practice – it’s a reason to seriously ponder why it is African American women resort to abortion as often as they do and address those issues.

Here’s a video of the Congressman.

Read: Bite yourselves

I think Johnny Weir’s response to this is spot on:

290 problems but a bitch ain’t one.

The interesting thing to me about recent political happenings is that if it were up to the House we would have passed  a stronger stimulus, health care reform with a public option as well as cap and trade – the Triple Crown of the Democrats domestic agenda – last year.

But that’s not all!

There are in fact 290 bills that the House of Representatives has passed that are languishing in the Senate. Two Hundred and Ninety. These range from renaming post offices to land deals to protecting wildlife sanctuaries and so on. All held up because the Republicans have decided that the path to electoral victory lies through doing everything they can to stop anything from happening.

Unfortunately it seems to be working.

Nose cut, Face spited

Perhaps  you’ve heard of OK Go? More likely, you’ve seen their music video. Y’know the one of them jamming while moving on four treadmills with the catchy song? Or at least you saw it before EMI decided that they didn’t want their intellectual property(IP) all over the place without them being able to cash in on it. Which is what lead singer for OK Go wrote about in an op-ed piece in the New York Times over the weekend.

A long time ago, when the internet was young and full of promise, YouTube wasn’t owned by Google and music videos were freely embeddable. Things change though. Now music companies have decided that they’d rather make it so you can only view videos on YouTubes site (where they get a share for every view) then get the free publicity of letting people share their videos however, whenever they want. If that’s what they’ve decided is a better business move, more power to them. However it belies a deep misunderstanding of how the Internet works and where the power of this massive information network lies. The Internet makes information absurdly cheap – to the point where it’s ridiculous to charge for it in most instances because if you do someone, somewhere will find  a way to make it free just to spite you. Trying to corral it doesn’t really work, making it illegal doesn’t really work and trying to hardwire restrictions doesn’t work either – one thing these companies should learn is to never underestimate the resourcefulness and spite of nerdy young men (and women too).

Yet they persist in doing so. Why? Because they have positioned themselves as the Great Gatekeepers of Culture. They possess the rights to your favorite bands, TV shows and movies and therefore you must pay their toll to access their property. Increasingly though this model doesn’t work. The nature of the Internet allows bands to do it themselves – they can do reasonably well selling their music themselves, designing their own website (allowing them to sell their own merchandise as well) and organizing their own concerts. It gives them direct access to their customers and doesn’t require a middleman. Which is, let’s face it, what a lot of these companies are.

So as less and less talent finds the deals offered to them by music companies more and more distasteful, the music companies find themselves putting a stranglehold on what they do have. Which just reinforces the cycle. I figure they’ll learn and adapt eventually, but only when they’re faced with just how untenable their position is. Vision and innovation, it seems, rarely come from established forces.

Does this mean I’m not real?

Via TPM comes the newest bumper sticker craze sweeping the crazies nation.

This guy wants to be President?

Rick Santorum, the guy who once famously compared homosexuality to bestiality and thus prompted Dan Savage to coin the term santorum to describe something else entirely, gave a speech today at CPAC that touched on the subject of DADT. The typical conservative line on DADT has been that the policy shouldn’t change because according to military brass it works just fine. Except now of course Admiral Mike Mullen came out against so now apparently the opinions of the higher ups don’t matter because they’ve been brainwashed:

Addressing how the military leadership, led by Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen, could now favor a repeal of the law, Santorum raised the specter of brainwashing.

“Political correctness is reigning in the military right now,” he said. “”Some people say: [Do] whatever the generals say [on DADT]. I’m not too sure that we haven’t so indoctrinated the officer corps in this country that they can actually see straight to make the right decision.”

Oh and did I mention that Mr. Santorum has been visiting early primary states recently? I’m almost secretly hoping he does run – watching him and Sarah Palin have a battle of wits would be epic!

TGIF:

In other news: CPAC is happening right now. The annual conference for all things Conservative in America is a font of disturbing and/or amusing stories. For example, CPAC decided to allow GOProud, a conservative GLBT group, to sponsor the event. At the time this caused some controversy. Now at the event itself we get to see the response, accompanied as always with the brilliant logic that conservatives bring to bear on gay issues:
